Who Was Rembrandt?

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669) was a Dutch painter and printmaker, generally considered one of the greatest visual artists in the history of art.

Born in Leiden, the second youngest of at least nine children to a miller and a baker’s daughter, Rembrandt initially enrolled at Leiden University at age thirteen. However, he soon left to pursue painting. He apprenticed for three years with Jacob Isaacsz Van Swanenburgh, and in 1624, moved to Amsterdam to study with Pieter Lastman, a painter of historical, mythological, and biblical scenes. Lastman’s storytelling ability significantly influenced the young Rembrandt.

The Stoning of St. Stephen (c. 1625), created at age 19, demonstrates Rembrandt’s early mastery and successful imitation of Lastman’s style.

Saskia van Uylenburgh was the wife of painter Rembrandt van Rijn. In the course of her life she was his model for some of his paintings, drawings and etchings. She was the daughter of a Frisian mayor. Asteroid 461 Saskia is named in her honour.

An Old Man in Military Costume. (Rembrandt’s Father). The subject, who appears in different guises in several other paintings by Rembrandt van Rijn and his contemporaries, wears a plumed hat and metal breastplate. His military costume may symbolize Dutch strength and patriotism during the struggle for independence from Spain.
